Q: This work depicts 4 pianists who participate in International Piano Competition. The talented ones grow as they meet each other, but there was no bad human relationship or villains. It was impressive that they each faced themselves positively.
Onda Riku : It's about things that can only be inspired by humans. I want to show the relationships of humans who face music purely, encourage each other's existence, cont. to face themselves. That's why I didn't have any nasty episodes of hiding the score or putting razor on piano. I also want to draw various kinds of talents, not just artists. If there is one genius pianist, I think that there are people who teach music, people who tune and maintain the piano, people who evaluate like a judge, and also people who "listen" like Kanade (book character).
Q: "Kanade-chan" does not appear in the movie. A person who has "listening and criticizing ears".
Matsuoka Mayu: Actually, when I read the original, what I thought the talent of Kanade is closest to mine. If I can choose, I wanted to play the role of Kanade-chan (lol).
Matsuoka Mayu: I'm Kanade, not a genius type Aya. Some actors are like Aya. When I met such people on the sets of movies and dramas, I stared at those people dazzlingly, thinking "I'm not this type". .. For eg, Suzu Hirose, who co-starred in Chihayafuru, really feels like a genius. She's been attracting attention since young, but I think she has a great talent to be able to keep up with the demands. I have a lot of respect and inspiration, but I wonder if I can aim for it.
Q: Onda Riku seemed to call Matsuoka Mayu as "Aya-chan!"
Matsuoka Mayu: When Onda called me by that name, I think that everything up to that point was rewarded.
Matsuoka Mayu: Though Aya was playing in front of the audience, she had the image that she was only talking to the piano. A thick glass used in an aquarium tank is separated between audience and herself. From that lonely performance, I wanted to "emerge" Aya.
Q: What is Onda Riku's the most memorable scene in this film?
Onda Riku: It 's a scene where Aya and Kazama Jin (Suzuka Oji) play Debussy's Clair de Lune under the moonlight. The cast is really the best in this movie. In that sense, I feel very happy and lucky.
Q: How do you both get inspired and change when you meet someone with overwhelming talent?
Matsuoka Mayu : I really want to ask Onda that question! Do you have the experience that you were overwhelmed by this talent?
Onda Riku: Authors' works are presented not only just with the present era works but also in the bookshelves alongside the works of classic literature, so I feel that I am always competing with overwhelming talents. It's a daunting thing.
Matsuoka Mayu : We, as actors, are also compared side by side with past movies called classics, such as black & white and silent movies.
Q: Please tell us if you have a movie that gives you the power to face yourself or a movie that you cherish.
Onda Riku: I like movies a lot, so it's difficult to focus on one. Recently "Kingdom" (2019). I love the original manga, but it wasn't just a movie, it was a great movie.
Matsuoka Mayu: I like the Korean movie: Sunny (2011). I love actress Sim Eun Kyung, but when I saw her for the first time in this movie, I was shocked that there were actresses who were born in the same Asian region and were able to perform like this. I wonder if I can do the same role.
Q: Did you think she has a talent different from yours?
Matsuoka Mayu: No, it was a talent in the direction I was aiming for. I think that she is a genius type of person who makes a lot of effort, rather than being able to do anything from the beginning. Recently, she has been active in Japan, such as "The Journalist" (2019) and "Blue Hour" (2019), and she seems to be studying Japanese enthusiastically.
Q: Shim Eun Kyung is interviewed before and said that she wanted to appear in a Japanese movie when she saw a movie directed by Kore-eda .
Matsuoka Mayu: Yes, she came and visited us at the shooting of "Shoplifters" (2018). We took a two-shot picture together! I was really happy.
