How many people did you audition?
Suo Masayuki: About 100 people.
Narita Ryo: 100 people! There were three actors that I worked with in other works. All of them also received the script. I heard, "I also received it!" from quite a lot of people.
Suo Masayuki: I didn't choose cuz of Narita's future potential. I decided whether it was good or bad for this movie.
His height was the biggest obstacle in choosing Narita which is too tall for the Taisho era. Japanese men at that time were much lower. "Narita-san, but 10 cm lower"
Narita Ryo: That's why there are a lot of lines saying "You're like a telephone pole"
Suo Masayuki: I think it would be strange to see a person of this height in the Taisho era.

How about the casting of Kuroshima Yuina?
Suo Masayuki: Kuroshima was a girl who felt anxiety and hesitation like "Is it okay to stay here?" "Is the job of an actress for me?" The heroine is beautiful and cute, but I thought it's better to have a little darkness. Kuroshima-san didn't look like a bright girl with a big smile. It seemed to suit the character Umeko (her character in Katsuben!).

Did you have any difficulties other than making voices?
Narita Ryo: The director told Inoue Mao "Please give him a kiss that melts him". That scene left me as an impressive scene. The hardest part is not to laugh at Takenaka Naoto's jokes. Although I was very serious about not laughing, the director still said angrily, "If you laugh now, this scene will start all over again!" Takenaka-san's jokes are as difficult as the silent film narration.

How did you learn silent film narration?
Suo Masayuki: I wanted Kengo Kora and Narita Ryo to have completely different performance styles as voice actors (benshi), so I decided to have different instructors for them from the beginning. Japanese arts really depend on the teacher styles. As there is no common method, they can only learn by "listening to the teachers' instructions".
Narita Ryo: This is true for different styles. However, Kengo Kora's voice is very beautiful, and I am very moved. Even his voice of a woman is also very good. My main task at that time was to learn female voices. So I haven't smoked in six months. I think it’s okay to smoke if the voice doesn’t change, but I can feel the voice change even if I smoke a little. Really, even if it's just a little bit, when I make a high pitch, it changes a lot.
Suo Masayuki: My movies generally require training of actors. But I think this needs to be done, and when they did very well, I'm very grateful.
