The novel doesn't contain a large part of the 15 years Fumi spent apart from Sarasa. But I couldn't complete the role unless I could fill in the blanks. There were so many things I had to accumulate in my mind.
I had never played a role this demanding before, and I had never spent so much time worrying about it and searching so deeply into my mind.
Dir. Lee does not give us an answer right away. He just gives us a hint and says, "Walk on your own feet from here". However, he believes in me and waited until I find the answer. So, I was relieved and could feel my way to the answer.

Dir. Lee recommended me to study Moonlight (2016), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and It's Only the End of the World (2016) to find Fumi's feelings towards Sarasa. However, the more I watched them, the more I'm confused. (lol)

GQ: In the past, Matsuzaka had always delved into the character by setting a theme song and image color for the role, but the keyword "plant" (植物 Shokubutsu) became the core of his performance as Fumi. For this film, he slept over at the filming location. He said that he'll remember the process when he grasped "Oh, this may be the one!" in himself and creates the role by relying on it.
GQ: Isn't it painful as you continue to struggle until you reach there?
Tori: I feel like the trunk of the tree will break if I expand my pursuit of the performance any further. So, I stop and extend the branches and leaves from another direction. I think this is an occupation that can take a toll on you without you even realizing it. So, I try to be as sensitive as possible so that I can quickly adjust to the situation.
GQ: Matsuzaka is always cheerful and willing to answer questions about his role. However, he says he is embarrassed to reveal his process to his peers.
Tori: It's sort of silly, like a magician showing off his tricks, so I don't really reveal my process to other actors (lol). Rather than spreading out the details of a role and arguing about it, I believe it is better to show what each actor has in store for the scene, so that there's a good chemistry.
